What is needed before you can open a small beauty salon business? Experience?

I'm assuming you would need to be certified in the business. Is there a certain amount of years of experience needed? Or, after you have certification can you find funding, etc. and go for it?What is needed before you can open a small beauty salon business? Experience?
It is not as hard as others have stated you do not have to be licensed to own a salon just to provide services with in it. Your salon will have to licensed and reviewed by the same state branch that provides licensing for cosmetologist. Generally, the make sure you have proper Equipment, trash bins, and facilities. Insurance is not a must but likely something you would want.

Funding, well at this moment funding is sparse for beauty and service industries due to the recession. I would recommend saving and a low interest Credit Card for backup...

You can purchase used quality salon equipment almost in every city or even ebay. You could have a 5 station set up under $2000.

As for as retailing and salon supply products. Try investigating up and coming hair care lines that may offer you huge discounts and promotion benefits by using their line. ie hair colors, hair sprays, and cosmetics...MAKE SURE THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL LINES.

How this helps email me if you have more questions....

You need to be licensed in your state. Your biz will also need licenses. You need experience, reputation, and customers who will follow you to your new shop. You need money. No investor is going to put their money into a new shop when there are so many salons already. It is too small a business and returns will be too low for too long to attract investors with $100,000. Borrowing by small businesses is nearly impossible today. You are limited to your own funds, plus perhaps a family member who is willing to invest, or another beautician who is willing and able to partner with you.
Business license, health dept. inspections at their whim and a huge 5 million dollar liability policy at minimum!

Funding will be tricky so if you haven't a penny to your name you will need a co-signor with very good credit. Try the local Small Business Association for the loans if you have good credit if YOUR credit stinks you will not get funding everything is based on YOU until the business builds a reputation for 2-5 years.

You will need an Atty to look over your contracts that will be given to your workers and on and on.
