Don't get me wrong, I do tip. But what is the reason if we're already paying their high prices ( I live in Southern California where it can be pretty darn expensive) . I don't want to be a poor sport or anything like that, but it seem like tipping is nothing more than paying someone to do their job well. I really don't mind doing it most of the time, but I don't always get the best service. But I tip anyway out of sheer pressure to do so. A friend of mine is a manicurist who charges over 50-60 dollars for a mani-pedi and complains when people don't leave a tip? Am I the only one who ever has this thought? If someone could explain the reason behind this, I'd appreciate it.
Why do we tip at nail salons?
It's a personal service being performed for your benefit, like a waiter or massage person, etc. You pay for the actual item, but because it's a personal service, you also ';thank'; the person with a gratuity.
Hope this helps! Why do we tip at nail salons?
It's the same reason as to why you tip when you go out to a restraunt, bar, etc. Have you ever gotten perfect service at a restraunt? Maybe borderline, but you still tipped? Right? You tip because someone is providing a service to you. Here in Az watiers / watiress / bartenders make approx. $2-3.00/ hr. They depend on those tips. The money you spend is the cost of the nail tip, polish, labor, electricity, etc.
Most nail salons rent their tables out. So the nail lady is paying $600 per month for her ';spot';. Then she makes 50% of whatever the customer pays her. So the first week of the month she is pretty much making 0 and just putting money towards her ';rent';. It isn't like they are actually making $60/hr plus tips.
I have thought this many times. I used to feel like I should always tip, but now I only tip if I do receive extra good service, or the person does an excellent job. It is not required, so don't feel like you have to tip at places like salons etc. Just do it if you are really impressed.
think of it this way: Why do you tip a waitress? Most of the money (no probably all) of what you paid for the actual mani and or pedi they don't get. Most of what they get paid is in tips. Same thing with waitresses. So if you don't tip them it's like saying they did a bad job.
If they don't own the salon themselves then they pay a portion of their monies to the shop owner, that or the owner only pays them an hourly rate and the tips help them survive. The way I look at it is if I can afford to have it done I can afford to put out a little extra to help them out.
i think you tip as they say to show appreciation. my thing is this...if you pay 50-60 bucks for both thats alot and it better look good. i know i have gone to get mine done and they didn't listen to what i told them and i was like...no tip for you!
My friend is a nail tech and unless you're doing it out of your home, you are not getting $50-$60 for your services. A large percentage of that goes to the salon, so the tips really help.
I don't know. I never go, myself. I never understood the custom of tipping someone to do a job they're getting paid to do, anyhow.
i dont understand it either. maybe the nail tech doesnt make any of the money you pay them? maybe it just goes to the salon directly?
i sorta agree with you
I absolutely agree! I'm on the other coast and it seems just as you said, paying someone to at least do a decent job and not make u wait forever!!! It's like bribery.
I tip $2 on my $12 eyebrow waxing each time just so that woman will not make me wait FOREVER and I'll have priority. She doesn't even pull all the hairs out I have to finish it at home- but she gets the basic brow shape in like none other:)
Always wait til the end to pay when possible and try to switch up salons to get away with not tipping if that works better for you- I know it can be real expensive and sometimes you just NEED a pedicure for example. It's not always a luxury but actually a necessity.
I always tip my nail person like I do my hairdresser. You don't have to go overboard like at a restaurant. A tip is a recognition of your appreciation of good service, If you want to keep a regular worker for any salon service and you are guaranteed a good job done, you will always get the best schedules and many will help you in a pinch for free for small repairs (not fills). Your hair and nails are not a part of your wardrobe to just stash in your closet when you are not happy with it. Hair and nails are the first impression when people notice you
